The Two-Process Model of sleep

Cocoo's wake window detection is based on Borbély's Two-Process Model (1982), which describes how sleep is regulated by two independent processes: sleep pressure (Process S) that builds during wakefulness, and the circadian clock (Process C) that creates time-of-day preferences for sleep and wake.

When your baby has been awake long enough, sleep pressure peaks and they fall asleep more easily. Too little awake time means not enough pressure; too much means cortisol kicks in as an alertness buffer. Cocoo analyzes your baby's actual data to find the sweet spot.

Infant sleep architecture

Around 3–4 months, a baby's brain undergoes a major shift: Jenni, Borbély & Achermann (2005) documented how infant sleep transitions from newborn-style cycling to adult-like sleep stages. This is the neurological event behind the well-known 4-month sleep regression.
